LIA IV 2023 Workshop: Strategies of Making Scientific Works about Food Self-Reliance in the Frame of Ethnophotography

The Scientific Anthropology Competition (LIA) IV is one of the activities under Cultural Anthropology Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University. In its implementation, this activity has entered its fourth year and has been routinely held every year since it was first held in 2020. The theme raised this year is “Food Independence Based on Local Wisdom” with several series of events namely Workshops, Photography Description Contest and Student Work Seminar. The theme was chosen because lately the existence of food has become the center of attention, both nationally and globally.

According to UU RI No. 18 of 2012 “Food self-sufficiency is the ability of the state and nation to produce diverse food from within the country which can guarantee the fulfillment of sufficient food needs down to the individual level by utilizing the potential of natural resources, human, social, economic and local wisdom in a dignified manner”. Based on a quote from one of the articles in the law, food and the potential of local community wisdom are actually very important to be described in the form of written and photographic works. Through this activity we hope that it can motivate students to produce a visualization of scientific work that can be understood by academics and the wider community without losing the scientific work. Besides that, LIA IV also has the goal of accommodating self-actualization of Anthropology undergraduate students in particular as well as undergraduate students of all study programs/majors/departments in Indonesia in producing scientific and visual ethnographic writings.

The series of LIA IV activities, namely workshops supported by the cooperation of the Regional XV Cultural Preservation Agency (BPK), which also facilitated this activity. Even though it was held online on 14 July 2023, the enthusiasm of the participants was very high as evidenced by the large number of workshop participants, totaling 116 people and certainly more than the previous year. In the implementation of the workshop this time there were three speakers who were invited to present material related to the theme raised, the three speakers were as follows:

  1. Ary Budiyanto, S.S., MA. (UB Lecturer of Food and Culinary Anthropology). Topic: “Local Wisdom in Creating Food Independence”.

  3. Wulansary, S.Sos, M.Hum. (Anthropologist, Ethnophotographer). Topic: “Ethnophotography Visual Language Packaging”.
