Public Lecture on Agricultural Anthropology: “Subak as the Last Bastion of Balinese Agrarian Culture”
Denpasar, December 10, 2024 - Widyasabha Mandala Building witnessed the holding of a public lecture themed "Subak as the Last Bastion of Balinese Agrarian Culture". This event was attended by various academics, students, and agricultural practitioners who were enthusiastic to explore the subak system as a unique agrarian cultural heritage in Bali.
The public lecture was moderated by Aryo Yudanto, an academic known for his expertise in anthropology and agrarian studies. The two main speakers were Putu Ardiyasa, a lecturer from STAHN Mpu Kuturan who is also a puppeteer of subak puppetry, and Ari Murdimanto, Head of the Subak BPK XV Working Team. Both provided in-depth insights into the importance of subak in maintaining the sustainability of agriculture and culture in Bali.
Putu Ardiyasa in his presentation emphasized that subak is not only an irrigation system, but also reflects the social and spiritual values of the Balinese people. "Subak needs to be continuously revived and reactualized in everyday life," he said. Meanwhile, Ari Murdimanto shared his experience in studying subak as a world heritage. "Subak must continue to adapt to remain relevant and able to face the challenges of the times," said Ari.
The event ended with an interactive Q&A session, where participants could discuss directly with the speakers. This public lecture is expected to increase awareness and appreciation of subak as the last bastion of Balinese agrarian culture that needs to be preserved. (Opk).
