Scientific Discussion: Commercialization Education
Anthropology
Students at the Anthropology Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana
University held a Scientific Discussion with the theme "The Current
Position of Indonesian Education". Departing from the assumption of
commercialization of education, Paulo Freire reminds us that in fact education
is only used as an accomplice in maintaining the grip of the dominant group.
This is produced through the curriculum, teaching methods, to the teacher
production system. Assumptions about education are believed by Freire as a tool
to create humans who are able to support the manifestation of the dominant
group. So it can be understood from Freire's quote, that education does not
come together with value-free science. Through educational institutions, the
interests of maintaining the influence of the dominant group are intensively
carried out.
The
scientific discussion on the commercialization of education presented two
speakers, namely Dr. I Ngurah Suryawan (Anthropologist, Researcher of Bali and
Papua) with the material entitled "Between Commercialization and
Recognition: Ethnography of Education from Papua Land" and Riski Dimastio
(SDMN) who brought the material "The Urgency of the Student Movement
Demanding Educational Justice". The activity was held at 15.00 WITA, on 21
July 2020, virtually via Cisco Webex and Live Instagram. (ows)
