Targeting the Advancement of Local Community Culture and Food: Cultural Anthropology of Udayana University Holds PPPM in Seraya Tengah Village, Karangasem
The Cultural Anthropology
Study Program, Faculty of Humanities, Udayana University, is again holding a
2023 Research and Community Service Training event (PPPM) which will take place
in Seraya Village, Karangasem District, Karangasem Regency, Bali. The activity
lasted for six days, from 05 to 10 March 2023 with a residential model.
The opening ceremony took
place on Monday (06/03) at the Seraya Village Office which was attended by the
Deputy Regent of Karangasem who on this occasion was represented by the Head of
the Karangasem Regency Youth and Sports Education Office, Mr. I Wayan Sutrisna,
SE, M.M., Karangasem Sub-District Head , Mr. Ida Nyoman Astawa, S.STP., Head of
Seraya Village Mr. I Wayan Dandri, Regional Heads (banjar/hamlet), Kelian
Seraya Traditional Village, Coordinator of the Anthropology Study Program, Mrs.
Aliffiati, S.S., M.Sc., lecturers Anthropology Study Program, and groups of
students from class 2020-2022.
The event began with
remarks from the Head of the Karangasem Regency Youth and Sports Education
Office, Mr. I Wayan Sutrisna, SE, M.M. in his remarks he thanked and gave
appreciation regarding the PPPM 2023 event which was carried out and hopefully
this event can provide more knowledge later when the students leave this place
"the people of Seraya have quite a lot of local wisdom activities which if
explored further can provide opportunities, both in the economic and
non-economic fields," he said.
Apart from that, Seraya
village also has quite big opportunities, especially the potential for local
food processing. With the support of the knowledge possessed by students, it is
hoped that local wisdom will be able to be processed and further developed into
something that has selling value and is better known to the wider community.
Followed by remarks from
the Head of Seraya Village, Mr. I Wayan Dandri as well as giving an overview of
Seraya village, where in his remarks he stated that this month Seraya is often
hit by rain, but in April it is really arid but "the hearts of the Seraya
people are not arid". Seraya Village also has many mountainous areas and
coastal areas with a population of ± 11,000 people. The majority of the people
work as fishermen, traders and some people become civil servants, some people
make ate, palm-leaf and arak. For villages that are more inland, most of them
still use the local language with minimal cellphone signal networks. If during
the research there are problems, he reminded them not to hesitate to convey
them and ask for help from the surrounding community.
Furthermore, a report
from the Coordinator of the Anthropology Study Program Ms. Aliffiati, S.S.,
M.Sc., where she said that the PPPM participants totaled 125 students
consisting of semester 2, 4 and 6 students and divided into 15 banjars. In this
study, students will be accompanied and live with their respective foster
parents. village icons, and many other things that they can learn here which
cannot be found in their hometowns like Jakarta. Likewise for student groups
who are in coastal areas, I ask them to be able to go to sea with fishermen
here, "he said.
The 2023 Research and
Community Service Training (PPPM) is a mandatory program every year held by the
Anthropology Study Program. This year's activity has the theme "Exploring
and Maintaining Local Community Wisdom While Towards Quality Community Cultural
Resources". Aside from being a forum for old and new students to
strengthen kinship ties, this event is also expected to be a forum for
actualization to train students' skills in conducting ethnographic research as
well as having a direct and useful impact on the surrounding community. Where
in practice students mingle and live with the community (residential) and carry
out community service in the form of promotional videos for Seraya village on
social media such as Instagram.
In this research, the
focus is on "Local Food Self-Reliance of Seraya Communities" according
to Kepmendes PDTT RI No. 82 of 2022 concerning Guidelines for Food Security in
Villages, and Promotion of Culture based on RI Law no. 5 of 2017. Based on this
theme, there are seven topics studied, namely the Overview of Seraya Village,
Ate Woven Crafts, Gebug Ende Ritual, Mejurag Nasi Ritual, Seraya Corn Local
Food, Coastal Community Culture, and Food sourced from the Sea. (nhw)
